Young Vic
The Young Vic's history reads like a who's who of British theatre aristocracy, but the venue suffers no luvvy delusions of grandeur. Reopened in 2006 after a major overhaul, it's an inviting, inclusive space true to its democratic ideals, and it prides itself on giving a leg-up to promising young directors, actors and technicians. Seating is unallocated so get in line early on the night – but remember, the front row is close enough to the action to see you showered with oratorical spittle, atmospheric rain or, if you're lucky, fake blood.
