The Cuckoo

Itchy can't really work out why this relatively new pub is so quiet. Perhaps it's because, between the classic tat-chic of the Hemingford Arms just up the Road and the bright lights of Upper Street ten minutes or so away, everyone's busy larging it elsewhere. Which is a shame, because the Cuckoo has all the creature comforts you'd want from your local. When Itchy ventured in out of the cold one icy winter's night we found well-kept ales, welcoming staff, and hearty, tasty food – classic gastro, and nicely done. For all its tasteful reincarnation, the Cuckoo doesn't feel up itself, and it's well worth venturing a little out of your way for. Definitely deserves some support.

Went in here the other night, lovely crispy pork belly and my mate had a fat venison burger. didn't want to leave!

I discovered the Cuckoo pretty much by mistake a year ago, and after a drink there vowed never to return. Then someone told me it was under new management, so I gave it another try… FANTASTIC!!! all the posh wine-bar-ish-ness has gone and it is now a proper pub again. The beer is perfectly kept, very clean and cold, (unlike most of the neighboring pubs!) with 6 draught lagers, 2 decent ales, Guinness and cider to choose from. There’s a great selection of Spirits and Liqures (definitely one for the wiskey drinker). The food menu is simple, no nonsense, home cooked food. One of the staff explained to me that all the fresh ingredients can be traced back to farm/grower. I’m going to go there on Sunday as some of the regulars told me it’s the best roast they have ever had. I’m so glad I went back to the Cuckoo, and will be returning frequently.
