Effra

This wonderful Victorian boozer is tucked away on a residential street just a 10-minute walk from Brixton tube, but vibe-wise, you can't get further from the perpetual chaos that greets you as you emerge from the station. The Effra is everything that's good about Brixton: Jamaican home cooking is on the menu, Guinness and Red Stripe is on tap, jazz bands take over on Thursday evenings, and old-timers in the corner get along just fine with students and the moneyed, 30-something couples alike. Summer offers a garden lit by fairy-lights containing the best seats in the house.
