Patisserie Lila
When the little hand at neighbouring Southwark Cathedral chimes to let everyone know it's brew-o'clock, take teatime to a whole new level and visit the Patisserie Lila. Climb up the dramatic iron staircase of this charming and beautifully furnished patisserie for a bird's eye view of the historic and gastronomic Borough Market. Serving posh sweet things made fresh in-house that will delight even the maddest of hatters, you can pile your plate high with Black Forest Gateau, meringue and all that your gluttonous heart desires.

Unfortunately I can't provide a full review of PL because we left before we even ordered it. Manager Lila refuses entry for pushchair users unless the chairs are folded. My friend was unable to fold up her pushchair because her 6mth old baby is too small to use a high chair, and folding the chair doesnt save much space anyway. We politely questioned the rule as, aside from us, the caf← was empty. The friendly staff apologised but warned that Lila may appear at any moment and would chastise us, empty caf← or not. We moved ourselves outside but it started raining, so we left. A woman with 2 children and pushchair arrived, and promptly left too, after she saw us sitting on the footpath in the rain. PL = Lilas rules, I guess, it just seems unfair to enforce this rule at all times, regardless of whether or not theyre busy. We wont be back. In future we'll find a relaxing, less pretentious place that accepts all customers, space permitting, and serves their sweets a little less bitter.
