The Lounge Soho Hairdressing
The best hair cut Itchy has had in London. We'd recommend having a snip here more than we'd advise anyone sleeping with Jade Goody to have the same procedure. Itchy haven't had such a great experience having bits of us chopped off since surgeons removed that pesky evil Siamese twin we used to have growing from our tailbone. We visited The Lounge just to check it out, and now refuse to put our follicles at the mercy of any other scissor sister. We were totally won over. This opinion wasn't even affected by the free glass of vino that comes as standard with every cut (or you can have a coffee if you'd rather stay sober while someone comes at you with a blade); the only thing we were punch drunk on was love for our freshly-crafted crowning glory. The superstar treatment begins with a head massage while they lather up your locks. Seriously, this is so sensual that Itchy started worrying about whether we'd worn decent pants as we felt like we were on the verge of a sexual encounter. Heavenly herbal scents come courtesy of Kevin Murphy products, and entertainment is provided by a changing collage of vintage Time Out covers on the ceiling above the basin. The snipping doesn't start until you've had a thorough consultation; our stylist was the wondrous Jolene, who shocked us by not equating home colouring with the antichrist; being realistic about hair damage and the time styles take to do in the morning; and making conversation about something other than holidays and soap operas. We chatted about The Horrors while she tackled our Faris Badwan-esque bonce. Music-wise, The Lounge spin more diverse tunes than a xylophone falling down a flight of stairs. No Atomic Kitten panpipe remixes here. Owner Joe Mills picks 15 CDs each month (you can even buy them at reception); we listened to Hot Chip whilst playing on their pink Nintendo DS and perusing a low-GI menu of sarnies and snacks to order. If you're wondering when we found the time to glance up at what was going on with our heads, the answer is that we didn't. And we didn't need to. Jolene told us at every stage what she was doing and what she was using to do it, so we didn't end up looking like we'd borrowed a wig from an unconvincing tranny when we tried to recreate things at home. She even showed us different ways to wear our new hair, and pinned it into a vintage-style up-do that earned us a big bad wolf whistle when we stepped out amongst the kooky-cool smutty surroundings at 8pm. Yep, 8pm - now you can get your hair cut and hold down a job to pay for it. Furthermore, students get 10% off, and if you recommend a mate who pops in for a chop, you'll get a 15% discount too. Suitably for a shop based on a strip of strip joints, The Lounge are great at taking things off, be it money or hair. And you'll finally be able to take off that cut-camouflaging hat you've been sporting, and doff it to the best salon we've found in London.
