Phoenix, The
The Phoenix is a ramshackle pub in the midst of the heaving metropolis, offering a mixture of modern art, comfy sofas and perilously high seating. Start the evening off in a lofty fashion if you dare, but it's probably best to get a little closer to earth as the beers kick in. There's a cavernous lounge area downstairs, filled with a random assortment of sofas. It's one of the few places near Oxford Street that you're pretty much guaranteed to get a pew. Fairly handy, if you've indulged in a marathon retail therapy sesh. At the weekend, the room downstairs transforms into a heaving dancefloor for rotating club nights. The pub grub is above average, with fancy fish finger sandwiches and hefty burgers on offer. For those of you on the pull, London College of Fashion is round the corner, so the glamour pusses – both boys and girls – usually pop in for a cheeky snifter. Main course: 8oz burger with stilton and field mushroom, £7.50 House wine: £9.95
