Meet the twins

It's an odd idea, twinning towns; two places in completely different parts of the world with no apparent relation to one another are linked, supposedly with the goal of fostering better international relations and cultural understanding. Ok, but is the process of choosing a twin completely arbitrary, as it seems to be? London, for instance, has six twins (actually that would make the lot septuplets then, wouldn't it?).

But does London have anything in common with its international siblings, or is it the black sheep of the family? Itchy set out to do a little internet-based research.

Beijing, China: Olympics. An obvious one: Bejing's got them this summer, London's gearing up for 2012.

Paris, and New York City: We're just going to kill two birds with one stone here and say: Fashion Week. Twice a year these cities go absolutely fashion crazy.

Tokyo, Japan: Street markets. Each weekend both cities sprout tons of markets, though we're assuming the ones in Japan are a bit more exotic (live octopus, anyone?).

Berlin, Germany: Both cities are or were divided into two, Berlin into East and West by the former Berlin Wall, and London into North and South by the Thames. Difference is, London is still split and likes it that way.

Moscow, Russia: Both are the capitals and largest cities of their respective countries, and both have red, white and blue flags. Hey we got lazy, alright? Go there yourself if you want to know so much about it.
